Thornbury.-- market town, par., and township with ry. sta., Gloucestershire, 7½ miles NW. of Yate by rail and 12 N. of Bristol - par., 11,570 ac. land, 480 tidal water and 2520 foreshore, pop. 4164; township, 10,674 ac., pop. 3917; P.O., T.O., 1 Bank. Market-day, Saturday. Thornbury was a prescriptive incorporation, but without municipal functions or property. Thornbury Castle, a palatial edifice, was begun in 1511 by Edward Stafford, Duke of Buckingham, and was never completed. Thornbury Castle is also the name of a modern seat.
