Renton.-- town and quoad sacra par., Cardross par., Dumbartonshire, on river Leven, 2½ miles N. of Dumbarton by rail - quoad sacra par., pop. 4387; town, pop. 4319; P.O., T.O.; was founded in 1782, and carries on calico-printing, bleaching, and dyeing. Tobias Smollett (1721-1771), the novelist, was born in the neighbourhood.
