AVON (The), a river of Devon. It rises in Dartmoor forest, 6 miles WSW of Ashburton; and runs, in a great casterly curve, with prevailing direction to the S, about 20 miles, past Diptford and Aveton-Gifford to the Eng lish channel at Bigbury bay.
