NEWCHURCH, a sub-district in Whalley parish, Haslingden district, Lancashire; containing Newchurch-in-Rossendale, Deadwen-Clough, Bacup, and Wolfenden. Acres, 9, 650. Pop. in 1851, 16, 915; in 1861, 24, 413. Houses, 4, 744. The increase of pop. arose partly from the prosperity of the cotton trade. A workhouse is here; and, at the census of 1861, had 55 inmates.
