This was the first General Election after the Third Reform Act, which gave the working class the vote in rural areas and brought in a new set of constituencies. The Liberals won most seats but not an overall majority, the Irish Nationalists holding the balance of power. The controversy over Irish Home Rule led to the Liberal party splitting.
