One of the landmark General Elections of UK political history, the 1906 General Election was the first in which the Labour Party played a major part. The Conservatives lost more than half their seats, having split before the election on the issue of Free Trade. The Lib-Lab victory led to the passage of several important pieces of social legislation, including the creation of the National Insurance system.
