This election saw little change from Labour's great victory of 1991, 620 out of 641 seats remaining with the same party. This was the first General Election in Labour's entire history in which they won enough seats to serve a full second term. The election in Northern Ireland saw much greater changes, the moderate Ulster Unionist party losing to the Democratic Unionist party, led by Ian Paisley, which rejected the Good Friday Agreement which called for power sharing with Nationalist parties. Among the Nationalists the Social Democratic and Labour party similarly lost seats to Sinn Fein.
