This was the first time ever that Labour won three General Elections in a row. They were returned to power with a reduced but still substantial majority of 67 seats. One important change not visible in these summary statistics was in Northern Ireland: the two traditional main parties, the Ulster Unionists and, on the nationalist side, the Social Democratic and Labour Party, were supplanted respectively by the Democratic Unionists and Sinn Fein.
