Notes:
- This table covers England and Wales 1891-1911 and Scotland 1891-1901.
- In the 1891 Census three columns on employment status were introduced:
- "Employer" - "a master, employing under him workers in his trade or industry"
- "Employed" - worked for a master
- "Neither employer nor employed, but working on own account"
Married women assisting their husbands were recorded as "Employed".
In 1901 and 1911 the three columns became a single column were the householder wrote "Employer", "Worker" or "Own Account".
- Employcode are integers used as a code to identify employment status building type characteristics used within the Icem project are as follows:
- 1 = Worker/Employee
- 2 = Employer
- 3 = Own Account
- 8 = Illegible or unclassifiable
- 9 = Blank
