The church is ancient; was restored in 1861, at a cost of £2,000; and consists of nave, aisles, and chancel, with tower and lofty spire. The Independent chapel is a handsome edifice. A weekly market is held on Tuesday; cattle fairs are held on the second Tuesday of every month; cheese fairs are held on the second Tuesday of April, Aug., and Oct.; and there are two linen manufactories. The parish comprises 900 acres. Real property, £5,090; of which £80 are in gasworks. Pop. in 1851,1,512; in 1861,1,420. Houses, 302. The manor was given; at the Norman conquest, to Westminster abbey.
