In 1887, John Bartholomew's Gazetteer of the British Isles described Llanidloes like this:
Llanidloes, parl. and mun. bor., market town, and par. with ry. sta., Montgomeryshire, in S. of co., on river Severn, 19 miles SW. of Montgomery and 200 miles NW. of London - par., 15,404 ac., pop. 4939; bor., 611 ac., pop. 3421; P.O., T.O., 2 Banks, 1 news-paper. Market-day, Saturday. The town has an agreeable situation, at the confluence of the rivers Severn and Clywedog, and is nearly surrounded by lofty hills, showing picturesque and beautiful scenery. ...
It is a very old place, the parish church of St Idloes having been founded in 620. The mfr. of Welsh flannel supports a great portion of the local trade, and in the vicinity are many well-known and productive lead mines. Tanning and machine-making are the other industries. Llanidloes is one of the Montgomery District of Parliamentary Boroughs, which returns 1 member.
