In 1870-72, John Marius Wilson's Imperial Gazetteer of England and Wales described Wincle like this:
WINCLE, a township and a chapelry in Prestbury parish, Cheshire; 2¾ miles ENE of Boslay r. station, and 5¼ SSE of Macclesfield. Post town, Macclesfield. Acres, 1,980. Real property, £3,120. Pop., 343. Houses, 70. The property is divided among a few. The living is a p. curacy in the diocese of Chester. Value, £116.* Patron, the Vicar of Prestbury. The church was mainly built in 1647, but has a very ancient chancel. There is a parochial school, rebuilt in 1865.
