In 1887, John Bartholomew's Gazetteer of the British Isles described Erskine like this:
Erskine, par., in N. of Renfrewshire, on the Clyde, 7535 ac., pop. 1653; contains Bishopton ry. sta., 5 miles NW. of Paisley; 1 mile NE. of sta., near E. Ferry, is Erskine House, seat of Lord Blantyre.
