In 1887, John Bartholomew's Gazetteer of the British Isles described Tongland like this:
Tongland, par. and hamlet, Kirkcudbrightshire - par., 9738 ac., pop. 829; hamlet, on river Dee, 2½ miles NE. of Kirkcudbright; P.O., called Tongueland.
