In 1887, John Bartholomew's Gazetteer of the British Isles described Dunlop like this:
Dunlop, par. and vil. with ry. sta.-- par. (partly in Renfrewshire but chiefly in Ayrshire), 7179 ac., pop. 1363; vil. (Ayrshire, 7½ miles NW. of Kilmarnock), pop. 357; P.O., T.O., 1 Bank; is noted for its cheese; 1½ mile E. of sta. is Dunlop House.
