In 1887, John Bartholomew's Gazetteer of the British Isles described Kirkoswald like this:
Kirkoswald, coast par. and vil., Carrick dist., Ayrshire--par., 14,861 ac., pop. 1781; vil., 4 miles SW. of Maybole; P.O.; figures in the early history of the poet Burns, whose " Tam o'Shanter" and "Souter Johnnie" (Douglas Graham and John Davidson) are buried in the churchyard.
