In 1887, John Bartholomew's Gazetteer of the British Isles described Chapel of Garioch like this:

Chapel of Garioch, par. (containing Pitcaple ry. sta.) and vil., in co. and 21 m. NW. of Aberdeen, 13,059 ac., pop. 1923; in the par. is the battlefield of Harlaw (1411).
