In 1887, John Bartholomew's Gazetteer of the British Isles described Comrie like this:
Comrie.-- par. and vil., mid. Perthshire, on river Earn, 6½ miles W. of Crieff -- par., 6293 ac. (2340 water), pop. 1858; vil., pop. 1038; P.O., T.O., 1 Bank. C. is situated in one of the most beautiful districts of Scotland; is the birthplace of George Gilfillan (1813-1878), Scotch divine, critic, and popular essayist; and is frequently visited by earthquakes, C. being on the great line of fault that separates the Highlands and the Lowlands.
