In 1887, John Bartholomew's Gazetteer of the British Isles described Yetholm like this:
Yetholm, par. and vil., Roxburghshire - par., 5960 ac., pop. 1045; vil., on Bowmont Water, 7½ miles SE. of Kelso, pop. (Yetholm and Kirk-Yetholm) 746; P.O., T.O.; was long the headquarters of the Scottish gipsies.
