In 1887, John Bartholomew's Gazetteer of the British Isles described Skene like this:
Skene, par. and hamlet, Aberdeenshire - par., 10,246 ac., pop. 1787; hamlet, 8½ miles W. of Aberdeen; P.O.; Skene House, seat, is 2¾ miles NW. of hamlet.
