In 1887, John Bartholomew's Gazetteer of the British Isles described Dalrymple like this:

Dalrymple, par. and vil. with ry. sta., in co. and 4 miles S.E. of Ayr -- par., 7833ac., pop. 1362; vil. (partly in Kirkmichael par.), pop. 305; P.O.; limestone and ironstone are worked; near the vil. is a bobbin factory.
