In 1887, John Bartholomew's Gazetteer of the British Isles described Meigle like this:

Meigle, par., quoad sacra par., and vil. with ry. sta., E. Perthshire, on border of co.- par., 3980 ac., pop. 696; quoad sacra par. (including the Kinloch portion of Coupar-Angus par.), pop. 966; vil., near river Isla, 1¼ mile NW. of Alyth Junction and 5½ miles NE. of Coupar-Angus; P.O., T.O., 2 Banks; in the churchyard is a remarkable group of sculptured stones; Meigle was once a seat of considerable trade; Meigle House is the property of the Kinlochs of Kinloch.
