In 1887, John Bartholomew's Gazetteer of the British Isles described Eccles like this:
Eccles, par. and hamlet, on S. border of Berwickshire, 5½ miles SE. of Greenlaw, 12,418 ac., pop. 1546; P.O.; the hamlet represents an ancient town, the seat of a nunnery, founded 1155, and burned by Hertford l545.
