In 1870-72, John Marius Wilson's Imperial Gazetteer of England and Wales described Wharfedale like this:
WHARFE (The), a river of W. R. Yorkshire; rising on Cam Fell; and running about 60 miles south-east-ward, past Kettlewell, Threshfield, Ilkley, Otley, and Tadcaster, to the Ouse near Cawood. It gives the name of Wharfedale to its valley; and it abounds, in much of its run, with very fine scenery.
