In 1887, John Bartholomew's Gazetteer of the British Isles described Rotherhithe like this:
Rotherhithe, par. (St Mary) and ry. sta., Surrey, on river Thames, within the parl. limits of Southwark, 754 ac. (175 water) and 152 tidal water, pop. 36,024; the sta. is 2½ miles SE. of Liverpool Street sta., London; Rotherhithe is popularly called Redriff.
