In 1887, John Bartholomew's Gazetteer of the British Isles described Beauly like this:
Beauly, vil. with ry. sta., Kilmorack par., N. Inverness-shire, on above river, 10 miles W. of Inverness by rail, pop. 915; P.O., T.O., 2 Banks. Near it are remains of priory founded in 1230.
