In 1887, John Bartholomew's Gazetteer of the British Isles described Eltham like this:
Eltham, par. and township with ry. sta., Kent -- 4124 ac., pop. 5827; township (in parl. bor. of Woolwich), 3782 ac., pop. 5048; P.O., T.O.; there are some remains of Eltham Palace, a residence of the English kings from Henry III. to Henry VIII.
