In 1870-72, John Marius Wilson's Imperial Gazetteer of England and Wales described Cogdean like this:

COGDEAN, a hamlet and a hundred in Dorset. The hamlet is in Sturminster-Marshall parish; and lies 2 miles SW of Wimborne-Minster. The hundred is in Blandford division; lies around the hamlet; and contams seven parishes. Acres, 32, 960. Pop., 463. Houses, 164.
