In 1882-4, Frances Groome's Ordnance Gazetteer of Scotland described Whitehills like this:

Whitehills, a fishing village in Boyndie parish, Banffshire, 3 miles WNW of Banff, under which it has a post office. Pop. (1871) 823, (1881) 920.—Ord. Sur., sh. 96, 1876.
