In 1870-72, John Marius Wilson's Imperial Gazetteer of England and Wales described Fordcombe like this:

FORDCOMB-GREEN, a hamlet in Penshurst parish, Kent; 4 miles W of Tunbridge-Wells. It has a post office under T-W., a chapel of ease, and a paper-mill.
