In 1887, John Bartholomew's Gazetteer of the British Isles described Rye House like this:

Rye House, ry. sta., in co. and 5¼ miles SE. of Hertford; adjacent are some remains of the old mansion which gave name to the plot of 1683 called the Rye House Plot.
