In 1870-72, John Marius Wilson's Imperial Gazetteer of England and Wales described Halfway House like this:

HALFWAY HOUSE, a tract in Nacton parish, Suffolk; near the river Orwell, 4¼ miles SE of Ipswich. It was formerly extra-parochial.
