In 1870-72, John Marius Wilson's Imperial Gazetteer of England and Wales described Walton Junction like this:
WALTON-JUNCTION, a r. station in the SW of Lancashire: on the Lancashire and Yorkshire railway, midway between Liverpool and Walton-on-the-Hill, at the forking of the lines toward respectively Ormskirk and Southport.
