In 1870-72, John Marius Wilson's Imperial Gazetteer of England and Wales described Troway like this:

TROWAY, a township in Eckington parish, Derby; 5½ miles N of Chesterfield. Real property, £4,559; of which £150 are in mines. Pop., 1,467. Coal is worked; and sickles and saw-handles are made.
