In 1887, John Bartholomew's Gazetteer of the British Isles described Tynan like this:
Tynan, par. and vil. with ry. sta., in co. and 8 miles W. of Armagh, on rivers Tynan and Blackwater - par., 17,043 ac., pop. 4707; vil., pop, 106; P.O., T.O. Tynan Abbey, seat, is 1 mile SW. of vil.
