In 1887, John Bartholomew's Gazetteer of the British Isles described Granard like this:
Granard.-- town, Granard bar., and par., partly also in Ardagh bar., E. co. Longford, 3 miles W. of Ballywillan ry. sta.-- par., 18,036 ac., pop. 5308; town, pop. 1828; P.O., T.O., 2 Banks. Market-day, Monday; its fairs and markets are of considerable importance.
