In 1837, Samuel Lewis's Topographical Dictionary of Ireland described Cecilstown like this:
CECILSTOWN, a village, in that part of the parish of CASTLEMAGNER, which is within the barony of DUHALLOW, county of CORK, and province of MUNSTER, 5 ½ miles (W. N.W.) from Mallow; containing 331 inhabitants. It is situated on the road from Mallow to Kanturk, and consists of 46 houses, of which the greater number are thatched. ...
Here is a national school, and a penny post to Mallow has been established. A constabulary police force is stationed here; and petty sessions are held in the school-house every Monday. Cecilstown has a patent for four fairs annually; but they are not now held.See CASTLEMAGNER.
