In 1887, John Bartholomew's Gazetteer of the British Isles described Portumna like this:
Portumna, market town, Lickmolassey par., SE. co. Galway, on river Shannon, near the head of Lough Derg, 12 miles W. of Parsonstown, pop. 1252; P.O., T.O., 1 Bank. Market-day, Saturday. Portumna has a good corn market. A small trading steamer sails daily to and from Killaloe, at the S. extremity of Lough Derg. Portumna Castle is the seat of the Marquis of Clanricarde.
