In 1887, John Bartholomew's Gazetteer of the British Isles described Horsley Moor like this:
Horsley Moor, tract, N. Northumberland, common to townships of Bigges Quarter, Freeholders Quarter, Riddells Quarter, and Fenrother, 192 ac.
