From 1884 onwards, The reports of the Local Government
Board sub-divided their counts of able-bodied male paupers on outdoor relief
into those relieved because of sickness and those relieved
"for other causes".
The main "other cause" was probably unemployment.
Note that able-bodied female paupers were instead categorised into wives and widows.
