Canmore: "On 4 July, 1504, the king erected the burgh of Merton in favour of Alexander McCulloch of Merton. There are no local records or traditions regarding it, and it must be classed as a mere 'parchment burgh'. Its site now appears on maps as Myreton Castle, in Monreith Park."
