geogcode |
Text string (max.len.=13). |
These are six-character alphanumeric codes defined by ONS, and identify "Frozen" 1991 Wards.
The documentation supplied by NOMIS says:
"Wards are defined by the Local Government Commissions, and reviews take place on a rolling basis.
ONS uses the wards in place at the time of the Census of Population as building blocks for other geographies.
Currently, these are 1991 wards. These frozen wards allow the ONS to produce time series on a fixed geographic base.
The UK has 11,330 frozen 1991 wards.
Ward population counts can vary substantially, even within a single local authority, but the national average is about 5500.
More populous electoral wards tend to occur in large urban areas."
