Documentation Author:
Humphrey Southall
Chronology:
The data are for the single year 1991.

Sources:

  1. This table was constructed by combining ward-level data from the Census of Population, as held in ind_1991_ward, and local government district-level data from the Census of Employment, as held in ind_1991_lad.

Notes:

  1. With the two exceptions noted below, numbers in each SIC2007 Division were computed by the following steps:
    • For each ward listed in ind_1991_ward, identify the containing district in ind_1991_lad.
    • Compute an estimate of the number in each SIC1980 "Activity" by multiplying the number in the containing SIC2008 Class by the proportion of all persons in the District in that Class who worked in the Activity.
    • Using the assignments from SIC1980 Activities to SIC2007 Divisions in ind_1991_codebook, sum the estimated numbers in each activity to SIC2007 Divisions.
  2. Two types of work had to be treated specially. Numbers in agriculture are always missing from the Census of Employment data, and numbers in "Domestic Services" seem always to be listed as zero. However, in both cases the SIC1980 Activity is also a SIC1980 Class, and maps directly to a SIC2007 Division, so the data were simply copied directly from the Ward-level data.
  3. Note that as these data are based partly on confidential Census of Employment data they cannot be directly published.

Checking:

  1. These are entirely derived data, based on downloads from NOMIS. While developing the procedures, the stages of the calculation were carefully checked using Hope End ward in Malvern Hills district as the testbed.

Columns within table:

ColumnTypeContents
geogcode Text string (max.len.=13). These are six-character alphanumeric codes defined by ONS, and identify "Frozen" 1991 Wards. The documentation supplied by NOMIS says: "Wards are defined by the Local Government Commissions, and reviews take place on a rolling basis. ONS uses the wards in place at the time of the Census of Population as building blocks for other geographies. Currently, these are 1991 wards. These frozen wards allow the ONS to produce time series on a fixed geographic base. The UK has 11,330 frozen 1991 wards. Ward population counts can vary substantially, even within a single local authority, but the national average is about 5500. More populous electoral wards tend to occur in large urban areas."
lad_geogcode Text string (max.len.=9). ONS ID for the local authority district containing the ward, as used in ind_1991_lad and therefore enabling linkage to the Census of Employment data.
sex Text string (max.len.=5). Gender: 'F' = Female, 'M' = Male.
sic2007_division Integer number. Standard Industrial Classification (2007) Division.
persons Floating point number. Number of persons working in the Ward with this combinatio of gender, employment status and industry.
