Contents:
County, Barony and Parish--level population counts for Ireland in 1891.
Approx. number of rows:
3,503
Table type:
Raw Data
Documentation Author:
Humphrey Southall
Chronology:
The data are for the single year 1891.

Sources:

  1. These data are a partial transcription of Table VII, "Area, Houses, Out-offices and Farm-steadings, and Population, together with the Valuation of each Barony, Parish, Townland, and Township in 1891", in each of the county reports within the em>Area, Houses, and Population volumes of the Census of Ireland for 1891. It is partial in that it was limited to the totals for parishes and counties. However, it has been supplemented by a complete transciption of Table III in the same reports, "Area in 1891, houses and population in 1841, 1851, 1861, 1871, 1881, and 1891, of each barony, also the general valuation in 1891", which contains almost exactly the same columns (see below for details). The two tables have been combined to ensure that parish rows are followed by the totals for the relevant barony. and parish and barony rows by the relevant county.
  2. The data were manually transcribed by Harold Price in 2022.

Notes:

  1. This table is notable for including counts from all censuses 1851 to 1891.
  2. As with other Irish parish tables, parishes are often split between two or more baronies.

Checking:

  1. All rows have been matched to the AUO, with the exception of those with the row_type 'Other Total' (see below).
  2. The total number of houses in 1891 has been checked against the sum of the three different categories of housses.
  3. The total population in 1891 has similarly been checked against the sum of males and females.
  4. With the exception of the types of houses, and the 1891 males and females, which are checked by the above row checksums, all other numeric columns have been checked by summing parishes and comparing with barony totals; and similarly for baronies and counties, and for counties and provinces. The values for baronies and higher are substantially error free, but there are currently many problems with the parish-level data. Some are hard to resolve given problems with the printing in the original reports.
